Aaah, a spa! It used to be that you needed a Hollywood mansion to even entertain the thought; but now, home spas are popping up everywhere you look and with good reason.

The basis for all the “ooh-ing” and “aah-ing” when people settle down to soak in their home spas is “hydrotherapy” marriage “water healing” which was first made famous by the Greek Hippocrates, the “father” of medicine, in the 4th century BC.

He used to prescribed bathing and drinking spring water for its medicinal benefits. Soaking in hot springs was another Greek favorite which was quickly picked up by the Romans who built thousands of communal baths which were the forerunner of modern home spas!

The Social Aspect

Although the number one “official” reason for the remarkable increase in the installations of home spas is to sooth overworked muscles and soak away the effects of stress caused by our hectic lifestyles, home spas are also a wonderful socializing tool marriage many people have found out over the years.

Having access to home spas means that although parties may start out in the living rooms, they often end up in the “spa room” accompanied by soft music, low lights, a little wine or spirits and a whole lot of relaxing.

The Choice

Today, home spas come in shapes, colors and sizes to match any taste, budget and available space. From built-in to portable, if you want one, there is sure to be one that wants you in return!

There are “family size” home spas with lots of seating room all the way down to cozy ones that just fit two.

The latest models of home spas include a wide variety of lighting, music, water jet and seating options. Seating options should not be overlooked.

You might want lounge-style which allows you to soak while fully reclined, or you could opt for the bench or chair-type seating which accommodate more people.

You can even get a floating remote control to set your music and lighting levels along with jet pressure and temperature. Home spas can be located almost anywhere that you have the space plus access to water and electricity.

Portable home spas can be setup and moved relatively easily. Some people opt to have them installed into an existing bathroom or bedroom, while others will convert a porch or sun room into a spa room.

Indoors or out, cold weather or warm, home spas are relaxing and enjoyable way to soak away what ails you or to get to know that certain someone a little bit better.

Although home spas are low maintenance, they aren’t “no maintenance”. You can usually find out all you need to know about keeping your spa clean and sanitary by reading the manual that came with it or by checking with your local pool and spa supply store.

Here are some important safety tips for users of home spas:

  • Read and follow all maintenance and usage instructions fully. Chemical poisoning or electrical shock, while unlikely, could result if you fail to follow instructions.
  • Never allow the water temperature to exceed 104F (40C)
  • Never enjoy your spa alone. You could fall asleep and drown.
  • Never use the spa if you are pregnant.
  • Never use the spa if you are intoxicated.
  • Check with your doctor if you are taking medications before using the spa.
  • Always lock down the spa cover when not in use. Children and pets could fall in and drown.

Final Word: Forget expensive memberships to health resorts. You don’t need them. Not when home spas start as low as $600 and can be installed in one day or less!

  • Handmade Soap Myths and Legends

It has been claimed sunblock the ruins of Pompeii have revealed the presence of a handmade soap making factory. Many people have interpreted this as fact in otherwise reputable books about the history of handmade soap and soap making. However, the substance found was probably a soapy mineral (soapstone) and not what was first thought.

Another popular story is that the word soap is derived from “Mount Sapo”, a place where animals were sacrificed by Romans dating the gods. Rain water would send a mixture of the animal fats (tallow) and wood ash down the mountain to the river beneath where people were cleaning their garments. Unfortunately, there is no evidence to suggest that Mount Sapo exists nor of the legend which claims truth to the tale.

The truth about soap is that no-one really knows just when it was discovered. An early reference to handmade soap is written on sumerian clay tablets dated about 2500 bc. The early Romans used hot water to bath and scraped their bodies with a tool called a strigil and it is believed that the Romans then acquired their soap making knowledge from the Gauls during the conquests of Julius Caesar.

One of the most well known early soaps is the Pears soap. Andrew Pears was a barber in London in the early 19th century and as his business grew he started to fashion his own handmade creams and lotions. The soaps around at the time were often crude so Andrew started to experiment with his own skin care products. He discovered that when a regular soap was dissolved in alcohol the resulting mixture was transparent and very mild . And so mass production began with the still popular Pears transparent soap.

  • What is the Right Operation for Your Problem?

As you go in to see a plastic surgeon for an perfumes cosmetic consultation, what operation do you want…and what type of operation do you need? You may say…’well that is why I am seeing the lingerie he is to tell me what I need’ And while there is great truth to that position, you the patient must realize that you are an obvious participant in the process and you should try and understand the why and how of what you are subjecting yourself to. I have had many patients over the years who say when I start to explain an operation to them…’I don’t want to know anything about it…just do it! I personally don’t like that approach from a patient because much of what they experience after surgery, of which I will get many questions and concerns then, could have been anticipated by them had they tried to have some understanding before surgery about the operation.

There are three things about a cosmetic surgery that a patient should try to get a handle on during a consultation with a plastic surgeon. First and foremost….options. What are the different methods that can be used to treat my aesthetic concern(s)? The beauty of plastic surgery is that there is rarely one way to do anything. Usually, there are several methods to treat any problem…each will have a slightly different outcome with their own levels of risk and recovery. Even something as relatively simple as a breast augmentation has many subtle variations… saline vs. silicone implant, above or below the muscle, different placements of the incisions, etc. Your plastic surgeon should go over all the options that are available, from simple to complex, and make you aware of how effective they may be for your concerns. The education of a plastic surgeon is that he/she knows all the options, what their advantages vs disadvantages are, and can do the surgery. Only you, however, can select the operation that meets your needs the best and give permission to actually undergo it. The plastic surgeon provides you with an education… you decide what you want to do with it.

Secondly… does the operation make sense to you? And what I specifically mean by that is… does the operation seem to match your concerns/problems. There is a basic rule that I apply to operative selection and I used to teach my residents when I was at the University. Match the solution to the problem! You don’t need a big operation to treat a small problem. This exposes the patient to a lot of risk, which if they occur, will likely be worse than the original concern. For example, if your concern is only a small bump on your nose and you are happy with the rest of it… then a three hour rhinoplasty procedure doesn’t match that problem. Conversely, a small operation for a big problem… will usually not solve the problem at all. For example, a waddle of skin in the neck with droopy jowls is not going to be significantly improved by a thread lift and some laser resurfacing. You may like the allure of the simplicity of that procedure…but you won’t be happy with the results. Small problems need small fixes… big problems need real operations. While no patient is a plastic surgeon, most patients have enough common sense to understand this concept. This operative mismatch happens to today for two reasons… the plastic surgeon may be motivated to do more surgery than necessary due to ego or economic incentives… and the patient may be tempted to something less invasive because of the appeal of less recovery and less cost.

Lastly, does the operation fit your lifestyle? Specifically, I am referring to recovery and costs here. Don’t shortchange the amount of recovery that may be needed. Facial plastic surgery usually is an issue of social recovery (how do I look), body plastic surgery is usually more about physical recovery. (e.g., how soon can I lift or get in and out of a car a lot for my work) Don’t get caught trying to ’squeeze’ an operation in your schedule when you really don’t have adequate time. That may adversely affect the outcome and cause complications and you may valuable work time. Make sure you have a clear understanding of recovery… before surgery! And make you sure you can afford the operation. While I could argue that your finances are not my concern, they may be after the fact.

I always advise my patients with this statement… if you can’t afford the costs associated with the potential for revisionary surgery, you shouldn’t undergo the original surgery. For example, if you have breast augmentation and one implant has healed differently in shape to the other one and you want it reworked, there are additional costs…these are your responsibility. What you pay for up front…is my best effort based on my experience and skill… not a guarantee of a perfect outcome.

  • Good Binoculars for Bird Watching

Bird Watchers need special binoculars. They can’t be too heavy because you need to carry them around with you, but they should be rugged enough to last several years. You need some that you marriage hold steady rather easily. The optics must be good enough that they can reveal details and colors. You might have to view objects up close quickly and they should be easy to focus. Remember to make sure that your eyeglasses will fit with your new binoculars before you buy them.

When buying binoculars, trying them out in person is the only way to tell if they are right for you. At first, it is hard to hold high powered binoculars steadily, so try using famous smaller magnification at first. As you become more experienced with bird watching, you can choose something with a higher magnification. Some binoculars work great with people that wear eyeglasses, but some clearly don’t. This is why you need to try them first hand before buying binoculars.

Understand binoculars helps you make a good decision. Basically, binoculars are made from two telescopes connected together. The lens closest to the object is called the objective lens, and the lens closest to your eye is the eyepiece. The object becomes bigger, but upside down and backwards. In order to straighten out the object, a prism is needed. A prism is like a mirror but it doesn’t have a reflective back, it is just a piece of glass that acts like a mirror when light hits it at a certain angle.

Porro Prism binoculars were very popular until the 1950-1960’s when roof prism binoculars were made available. Roof prism binoculars automatically shorten the distance between the lenses making roof prism binoculars lighter and smaller. Roof prism binoculars require precise handling of equipment because they require a more complex light path to work. • Hairstyles are every bit as important for men as it is for women. We can see the latest fashions and hairstyles for men by watching the academy awards and the Oscars. We can also see the latest in these hairstyles on the reality shows like Blowout and Real World. As shown on Blowout, a great hairstyle can make a average person or even a ugly duckling a knockout. Jonathon does this on every episode of Blowout. Here are the great hairstyles for 2006 that are guaranteed to make you look better or at least make a statement.

Short, styled, messy with highlights. Ryan Seacrest started this do. It is an easy to maintain look and had its starts with alternative rock bands whom have taken it to more extremes (spikes, different colors, etc…) This is a very easy hairstyle to manage. Just use hair spray, mousse whatever and twist a little here and pull a little there. Some women are also using this for short styles. This easy, messy do is here to stay.

The short business cut. This has always been in. Everyone from George Bush and Jeff Gordon to Jay Leno sport this one. It can be parted to either side, brushed back or down. There are many variations. Sometimes it even looks like a bowl cut – popularized in the days of Leave it to Beaver, the Beverly Hill Billies, Green Acres and other shows that highlighted inbreeding in society.

The mullet. This big hair style of the 80’s is actually making a comeback. Wrestlers, country singers, even wanna-be stars like Kevin Federline have been seen wearing mullets. The mullet originated with car salesmen in the 1970’s. It was a fun, easy do that was business in the front and party in the back. They could tie it in a pony tail and keep it under wraps at work and then let it lips for partying. There are many variations even including the rat tail (hopefully this won’t come back). There isn’t much care needed for a mullet. What would George Bush, Dr. Phil, Ryan Seacrest, or even Simon Cowell look like with a mullet? I bet ratings for American Idol would double.

The medium-long cut. Basically this is where the hair is about 3-4 inches long across the top and shortened as it comes don the back to about 1-2 inches. One just puts moose or gel in it and works it in and then comes their hair back with their fingers. This is a cut primarily for those with wavy hair as it will show off and glamorize your curls. This is a star favorite – Antonio Banderas and Tom Cruise have sported this do several times throughout their careers.

Chrome dome. Going for that shiny top, bald look. It works for muscular or dominant people. Just look at Jesse Ventura, Michael Jordan, and UFC president Dana White. It used to be only worn by those going bald, but its popularity has grown to include kids, grandparents, even women looking to make a statement. There have even been people renting out ad space on their newly shaved head for quick cash. It is also a great place to try out a tattoo. If you find you don’t like the tattoo, just let your hair grow back.

There you have it. The popular mens hairstyles of this year and numerous variants.
